Batty France had its origins in the late 1960’s when Ted Batty and Colin France worked together and developed a business which offered Chartered Building Consultants expertise for their Clients.

The Practice has since developed and now offers a variety of services, in addition to those of the traditional Quantity Surveyor, all of which are tailored to the particular needs of the Client.

Work Experience
My first experience of work ‘proper’ was with international consumer goods manufacturer Kimberly Clark, who sponsored me through my Chemical Engineering degree course. I was lucky enough to be given two paid industrial placements in paper mills in Kent and North Wales, working as Lab Technician and Assistant Process Engineer respectively.

On graduating I moved into mainstream chemical manufacturing as a graduate engineer with Albright & Wilson and over a three-year period was involved in all aspects of major design projects in the UK and overseas (>£1 million). This included chemical plant commissioning, with responsibility for supervising and training contractors and operators; detailed process design; devising and implementing lab & pilot plant trials; leading multi-disciplinary teams in HAZOP processes; organising equipment installation and material deliveries; developing ISO 9001 quality procedures; carrying out internal audits.
In 1999 I moved to work for Cytec Industries as technical support to a production shift team, responsible for trouble-shooting, process optimisation and operator development. I collated and reported performance information for four production lines and instigated process and plant improvements to increase occupancy and product quality. I also supervised laboratory staff and deputised for the team leader.

In 2001 I was given the opportunity to move into the field of Health & Safety and completed my NEBOSH Diploma whilst working as Safety Co-ordinator for Cytec’s manufacturing site in Bradford. This was a steep learning curve but a great experience. I reported to the site director and advised the management team on all aspects of health and safety, as well as managing site security, catering & cleaning services.

In 2003 I decided to move out of manufacturing but continue my career path in health & safety. I got a role as Safety & Environment Adviser with Marsh Ltd, gaining experience in a large, London-based corporate environment.

In 2005 I was promoted to head up the department and became Safety, Health & Environment Manager for the wider group (Marsh & McLennan Companies) across the UK & Ireland, a position I held for just over 10 years. I managed a team of professionals responsible for providing advice and support to around 6,000 managers & employees across 50 locations.

In 2015 I decided to ‘go it alone’ and apply what I’d learnt over the years to becoming a consultant. I founded Sharp Safety Solutions Ltd and now provide support for clients across a range of industry sectors. Services include comprehensive compliance audits, development of policies, procedures & risk assessments and the provision of ongoing competent health and safety advice. I maintain my professional competence through my membership of the IOSH Yorkshire Branch, attending regular meetings and seminars to ensure my knowledge is up-to-date.

I provide CDM services through Corand CMS, the Health & Safety arm of Batty France. I’ve been working for Corand since November 2015 and have provided CDM and general health & safety services to a number of Ashley and Andrew’s clients, including Principal Designer & Client support throughout larger construction projects.

Outside Interests
I love to travel and try to combine this with my other loves of walking, socialising, eating & drinking, with as many ‘adventure’ holidays as possible. In recent years these have ranged from ‘Walking the Prosecco Hills’ in Italy to completing the Inca Trail in Peru and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

I’m a member of my local running club and ran my first half marathon in 2016. I’m a trombone player and have played in a number of brass bands over the last 25 years. I’m also a very proud auntie and love to spend time with my young niece & nephew.
